As you begin your transition into adulthood, you start school with a clear scholastic slate, as well as a lot of freedom and a lot of selective choices. The decisions you make and the steps you take during your first year of school will have a significant impact on the rest of your academic career.

1. Establish relationships with your classmates.

2. Figure out where you’ll be able to study the most effectively.

Discover a spot that works best for you to do your work effectively – while avoiding as many distractions as possible. It could be your hostel or apartment, or a cozy corner of the library.

3. Participate in extracurricular activities on campus.

A mixture of nostalgia and a feeling of not quite fitting in is a key issue for a large number of new freshmen. Is there a response? Consider joining a chosen set of student organizations and clubs – but be cautious not to overdo it.

4. Don’t feel pressured to choose a selective course on the spur of the moment.

It doesn’t matter if everyone else appears to know what they’re doing with their lives; many of them don’t. University is a great place to figure out who you are, what you enjoy doing, what you’re excellent at, and what you want to be.

5. Get to know your roommates and other residents 

Your primary safety net – this first year and for the rest of your life – is the people you live with, many of whom are going through similar and similar experiences and sentiments.

6. Make time for yourself.

Set aside time and activities that will help you relax and unwind after a long day or week. Be kind to yourself, whether it’s by joining a gym or fitness facility for weekly exercise, watching your favorite TV shows, or keeping a diary.

7. Try to stay on campus as often as possible.

Try not to leave campus too soon or too often, whether it’s for a better sense of independence, homesickness, a career or business, or a boyfriend or girlfriend from home. The closer you are to the center, the more easily you will cope and prosper. The more time you spend getting to know your new classmates and the campus, the more at ease you’ll feel at school.

8. Improve your organizational skills.

In secondary school, your tutors had a habit of guiding you through all of your homework and submission deadlines. Your teachers at university will not care if you do your tasks or not, which can lead to a lack of seriousness in the classroom for many students.
